Kurobe Dam (Toyama)

Toyama

One of world's largest dams
Offering a panoramic view of grand nature

The Kurobe Dam is Japan's largest arch dam, completed in 1963. With a height of 186m, it remains the tallest dam in Japan. It discharges 10m3 of water per second, and is a tourist attraction between late June and mid-October. As the observation deck provides a grand view of gushing water creating a great cloud of spray, more than 1 million tourists visit the dam every year.

The gentle and beautiful arch of the Kurobe Dam against the great nature of the Northern Alps, which includes the giant 800- to 1,000-year-old tree Kurobe, alpine plants, stumps of huge trees, and beech tree forests with cold springs, makes strolls in the surrounding area enjoyable.

Trails overlooking the dam enable visitors to enjoy forest bathing, while an excursion boat, which takes 30 minutes to go around Lake Kurobe, gives passengers a grand view of the Northern Alps, including the Tateyama mountain range. Visitors can choose walking courses under sunbeams filtering through leaves suitable for the time and physical strength they have.

The Kurobe Dam is located in the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a popular mountain sightseeing route from the Omachi hot spring village in Nagano Prefecture to Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture, where trolleybus, cable car, and aerial tramway rides are also enjoyable.

While the use of these transportation means enables you to readily reach the Kurobe Dam, make sure to wear clothing suited to the temperature and weather conditions because the dam is in a 3,000m-high mountain area.
