Garyu Sanso (Mountain Villa)

Ehime

Mountain villa built on a cliff fills one with harmonious feelings
A local treasure and famous place

Garyu Sanso is on a beautiful site above the Hiji River on the east edge of Ozu City in Ehime Prefecture. The mountain villa stands above the Garyu depth in the river. This sightseeing spot is popular among local people. Around 1897, the trader Torajiro Kawauchi took 10 years to plan and 4 years to build this famous building in the Sukiya-zukuri style (Japanese traditional architectural style). In 1985, it was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property Designated by Ehime Prefecture.

The building is impressive, but you should also see the garden. "Borrowed scenery (meaning it borrows colors from the scenery)" is one of Japan's landscaping techniques. Scenery formed from borrowed scenery creates a spectacle filled with a lively feeling as if nature outside the garden is incorporated in part of the garden. Garyu Sanso incorporates mountain, forest and river scenery from Tomisuyama Mountain and Hiji River. Within this, Garyu-in is the main wing of the villa, and together with the Furo (Perrenial youth) tea room and Chishian (Knowledge stop) tea room building, they form a three building site filled with elegance. Viewing the graceful scenery of the garden and Garyu Sanso, you can sense the spirit of Japan. On Sundays and holidays from April to October, one can enjoy tea at 400 yen per person. We hope you can come and experience the spirit of Japan.

This site gained one star from "Michelin Green Guide Japan" in May 2011, attracting attention.
