Wakasa lacquerware has a 400 year history and is known throughout the country, the most famous being the Wakasa-nuri hashi (lacquered chopsticks) of the city of Obama, Fukui Prefecture. Production here accounts for over 90% of lacquered chopsticks in Japan. Craftspeople here produce a variety of chopsticks with modern designs, in addition to the highest quality chopsticks in which shells and gold/silver leaf are repeatedly coated with lacquer to highlight their beautiful patterns. Chopsticks are a local specialty of Obama,and there are shops specializing in chopsticks There is also a Chopsticks Festival every August in which a special Buddhist service is held for chopsticks.
