Inshu-washi

Tottori

Inshu-washi Japanese paper is produced in Saji-son and Aoya-cho, both in Tottori Prefecture. The production of Japanese paper in this area is said to date back as long as 1,000 years. Production began on a large scale later, in the first half of the 17th century in Aoya-cho, and in the first half of the 18th century in Saji-son. During the 17th to the mid-18th centuries, production was encouraged to such an extent that Japanese paper produced here supplied all paper for public use in the region. At present, the region produces ordinary Japanese writing paper used for calligraphy, and paper for other uses including fusuma (sliding doors). Inshu-washi was designated a traditional craft by the Japanese government in 1975.
