Beppu Bamboo Basketry
During the Edo period (1603-1867), bamboo goods used in the preparation of food were made to meet the demand from visitors who often stayed at the hot springs at Beppu for some time either to relax or to benefit from the healing effects of the spring water.This simple craft then developed into a local craft industry centered in Beppu.The principal variety of bamboo used is madake bamboo which grows in Oita. Madake bamboo is well suited for basket making. A number of other varieties and types of bamboo including henon bamboo, black bamboo, gomadake bamboo which is a type of henon bamboo, and madake bamboo are also used depending on the article being made. Using eight fundamental techniques,a vast range of goods are produced fully utilizing the inherent beauty of bamboo as a material.
