Oita Christian Martyrs Memorial Park (oita-ken kirishitan jyunkyou kinen kouen)
In feudal times, Oita Prefecture was known as "Bungo". During the rule of the feudal load Sorin Otomo (1530 - 1589), a fervent Christian himself, Christian culture flourished in Bungo and many people became ardent believers. However, with the prohibition of Christianity in Japan in the early 17th century, many missionaries were banished and thousands of believers were arrested and executed. In Bungo, too, there were many martyrs. In the village of Katsuragi, where this Memorial Park is locates, some 200 martyrs of all ages defiantly chose to die rather than denounce their religious beliefs. This park is dedicated to the memory of these people who heroically died for their faith.
