Amami Park

A theme park where you can encounter the history, nature, and arts of Amami

(c) K.P.V.BAmami Park is a large complex where you can learn about the nature, history, and culture of Amami. The dome-shaped building lying amid the verdant surroundings is Amami-no-Sato. Next to it is the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art. A distinctive building that is a modern recreation of the "borekura" raised storehouses that were once seen throughout Amami, it heightens the feeling of being in a tropical land.

Amami-no-Sato has on display many models, photographs, and artifacts in the form of everyday utensils from the area. The 82-seat Amami Theater shows a 20-minute film featuring beautiful images. As you watch, you will be able to learn about the past and present of Amami. The Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art commemorates the Japanese painter Tanaka Isson (1908-1977), who painted the nature of Amami. Characterized by a bold, yet delicate style, with rich colors, he painted approximately 600 works (excluding sketches and preliminary drawings) over the course of his life, with birds, butterflies, and trees a recurring theme in his paintings. Most of these are in the collection of this art museum.
