The town of Western culture is now a fashionable sightseeing spot
Situated between Yokohama's China Town and Yamate, Motomachi is known as a town of fashion and one of the famous sightseeing spots of Yokohama. Its shopping street with beautiful stone pavement is lined with brand shops, cafes, restaurants and other stores with the Yokohama atmosphere, which make you feel like you are in a fashionable foreign town. Motomachi shopping street originates from business with foreigners who started to live in Yamate District during the 1870s. The town's people developed their Western culture by learning skills of baking, laundry, tailoring of Western clothes, and Western furniture. The tradition has been passed down to today's manufacturing and created a fashion style called hamatora. Kitamura's bags, Mihama's shoes, and Fukuzo's apparel remain perennial favorites.
Motomachi is for shopping and holds many events and sales. The Charming Sale is held twice a year and attracts many people from all over the country. The town is full of life, with many festivals, including a St. Patrick's Day parade and Motomachi Halloween festival, held in March and October respectively.
