Comment Sohkoh-ji, a Zen temple of the Soutou sect, was built in 1384 during the Nanbokucho Period over 600 years ago. It was founded by the priest Getsuan Ryoen and built by Sato Masanobu, who was the governor of Ise. Located east of the shoin (library), the Horai-en garden dates back to the Edo Period and was designated a scenic location by the Japanese government in 1996. The "mushroom cedar" in front of the temple was designated a natural monument by Yamagata Prefecture in 1956.
