Comment The Kyu-Abumi-ya is a typical example of what the premises of a shipping agent of Sakata once looked like. The machi-ya style of the agent's office and family house combined show visitors how the premises looked and functioned during the Edo Period, an era in which the ferry business in the Sea of Japan was extremely important and prosperous. Following eight years of renovation work commencing in 1990, the machi-ya (literally town house) was restored completely to the typical style of old Sakata, with roofs thatched with cryptmeria bark, cobblestones, 18m tatami room and corridors facing onto an inner courtyard of the same length. If in Sakata, don't miss visiting some of the town's many historical buildings.
