Comment Mt. Koyasan welcomes both religious visitors and general tourists. Fifty-three temple lodgings (shukubo) are located in the downtown area, but no accommodation is available on the mountain. Spending a night at one of these temple lodgings is an experience not to be missed, and some temples even provide beautiful accommodations and gardens that are no less luxurious than those of top Japanese inns (ryokan). At temple lodgings, monks cook and serve simple meals prepared in the traditional style of the area for the guests. A tasty vegetarian supper might include slices of yam presented like sashimi, wheat gluten dishes, and "nabe-mono" dishes cooked and served in a large pan. Hot Japanese sake called hannya-yu ("enlightening hot water") and beer may also be enjoyed with the meal.
