Comment The highlight of Gokayama sightseeing is a number of gassho-style houses listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. These are found in in two locations; the Ainokura district of Taira-mura village, and Suganuma district of Kami-taira-mura village. Located in the deep mountains of southeast Toyama, the area is also known for its various folk songs (minyo), including the well-known "kokiriko-uta". This isolated location has helped create a very distinctive culture for the area, and visitors can enjoy local specialties such as Gokayama-washi (handcrafted Japanese paper) which they can try making for themselves, and minyo, which they can learn here. In winter, the area also welcomes many skiers.
