Comment Entering the town of Higashi-Iwase-machi feels like stepping into a museum. Well-preserved buildings of the former Kitamaebune trading boat merchants line the main street, known as Iwase-omachi dori. The west side of the street faces a port located at the mouth of the Jintsu-gawa River, convenient for shipping. From the Edo to the mid-Meiji Era, when trading by the Kitamaebune boats thrived, the town flourished as one of the busiest ports on the Sea of Japan coast. The Mori family was a family of these Kitamaebune merchants. At their former residence, which has been designated an Important Cultural Asset, visitors are attracted to luxurious features that tell the story of the family's glorious past, such as a decorative flooring monolith used for an earth floor, beautiful colored plaster on doors of a storage shed used for valuables, a ceiling made of old cherry wood with beautiful woodgrain patterns called tamamoku, and a miniature model of a baisen (the nickname used for Kitamaebune trading boats).
