Comment The Date family temple was reconstructed in Sendai when Date Masamune moved to Sendai Castle from Iwadeyama. In 1441, this temple was originally erected by Date Mochimune, eleventh head of the Date clan, to pray for the repose of his grandmother Ranteimyogyokuni. The main hall and three-storied pagoda in the quiet garden are particularly memorable. The garden is a "chisen kaiyu" (pond-spring-strolling) garden set against a backdrop of red pines and cedars. Distinctive seasonal views feature shidare-zakura (weeping cherry trees) in spring, irises in early summer, maple trees in autumn, and snow in winter.
