Comment Because the Kongosho-ji temple is in an unlucky location known as the kimon (devil's gate) of Ise Jingu shrine, the temple has long been referred to as a guardian temple for Ise Jingu shrine, and people believe that to complete their worship those who visit the Ise Jingu shrine should not miss a visit to this temple. The principle deity of the temple is Fukui-Chiman Kokuzou-bosatsu, listed as the highest among the three great kokuzou-bosatsu (akasa-barbha bodhisattva) of Japan. The image of the deity is kept stored away and is shown in public for worship only once every twenty years, each year after the important Ise ceremony known as gosengu (transposition of the shrine's sanctuary).
