Sugiharagami is a well-known
type of washi (Japanese handmade paper) and has been handcrafted
for approximately 1,300 years. Although this tradition actually
died out in the Taisho Era, the method was rediscovered in 1970
and the resurgence gained real momentum when the research center
was founded in 1972. While the present production still uses traditional
handcrafting methods, more than a hundred different items made with
sugiharagami have been developed. These products, which provide
a glimpse into Japanese traditional craftsmanship, are a great souvenir,
especially for foreign tourists. Visitors are welcome to make a
self-guided tour within the research facility. |
