The actual year this shrine
was founded is not known for certain, but its description first
appears at the end of the Heian Period (around 1100 AD). The shrine
was said to have originally been devoted to the God of the Sea (fishing)
and later to the God of Fortune for thriving businesses. About a
million visitors and worshippers come to the shrine, with numbers
peaking at the special celebration of the annual "Toka-ebisu"
festival from January 9 through 11, the largest festival in the
Osaka and Kobe regions. The shrine is also known as "Ebetsu-san",
a name which has been frequently quoted in the traditional stage
and puppet performances for several hundred years. |
