Comment Honma Taizo (from Sado Island) established the Maruichi Honma merchant house. It took 20 years to build the house that served as the base of the family business - a dry goods store, brewing and marine transportation. Restoration of the house began in 1998 and the house was designated an Important Cultural Asset of Hokkaido in April 2000. Part of the building originally open to the public has been demolished, however the Honma residence still retains the atmosphere of the Meiji Era with a stone dry goods store, two warehouses, house (seven rooms) plus an additional three storied house on the property.
