Gero Onsen Gassho-mura is a
treasured collection of ten gassho-style houses transferred from
Shirakawago, a conservation area in Gifu Prefecture listed as a
World Cultural Heritage site. The houses, including a National Cultural
Treasure which was the former residence of the Oto family, have
been converted into museums to provide visitors with historical
information about local life. At "Mingei-no sato", visitors
can experience traditional handcrafts and old-style food. The "Minzoku
Shiryokan" is an ethnic museum, while the "Komainu Hakubutsukan"
displays an international collection of stone carved dogs (komainu).
The "Shirasagi-za" is a theater that runs a variety of
shows by traveling troupes and "Furusato-no-mori" is composed
of five pavilions displaying features of local life in different
themes, from life in the forests to Gero festivals. |
