Comment Ukai (cormorant fishing) in the Nagara-gawa River is a traditional fishing method practiced for some 1300 years. Six cormorant fishermen work the river, handing the technique down through their families, and approved by the Imperial Household Agency. The equipment used, a set of 122 pieces of fishing gear, has been designated an Important Tangible Cultural Asset. Ukai is also an Intangible Cultural Asset of Gifu City. Come and see the traditional ukai of the Nagara-gawa River, and prepare to be enchanted.
