Okutama is a mountain district in the west of Tokyo. The valley upstream from the Tama River, which flows into Lake Okutama (which provides water to the people of Tokyo), is a mountain district that does not feel like part of Tokyo at all. Mount Mitake, which was in ancient times a scene for mountain-based religious practices, is now a popular hiking road for the people of Tokyo.
