The heart of Kobe’s shopping districts and all forms (land, air and sea) transportations.
Sannomiya, the largest shopping quarter of Kobe, is located on the west bank of Ikuta gawa (River). Not only is it popular as a place for shopping and dining, but also a very important transportation hub for the various train lines which come through Sannomiya; JR Tokaido Honsen Line, Subway Yamate Line, Hanshin Main Line, Hankyu-Kobe Honsen Line, and Kobe Shin-kotsu Port Island Line.
Santica Town is Sannomiya’s underground shopping street with over 120 shops varying from boutique fashion goods to restaurants. The open floor gives a bright atmosphere and universal transportation design makes it an easy access to all.
Stretching southward from Shin-Kobe Station through Sannomiya Station to the port, is a flower-lined road, known as Flower Road. Appropriate to its name, Flower Road is not only decorated with flowers, but with fountains, sculptures, and luscious trees along both sides of the road, as well as a home to Japan’s first flower clock. The Higashi-yuenchi (Amusement Park), just beside Kobe City Hall used to be an exclusive playground for foreigners and the birthplace of modern sports. It also serves as the famous illumination site, Luminarie, which is held every winter to commemorate the lives that were lost in the 1995 Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake.
On the southwest direction from the station, is the 550 meter long arcade between Flower Road and Motomachi called, Sannomiya Center. One-of-a-kind boutiques, import stores, patisseries, confectionaries, shopping department stores, and an array of restaurants put Sannomiya Center as the Mecca of all shopping districts within Kobe.
Sannomiya Jinja (Shrine) is located at the south of the Sannomiya Center. It is where the name of the “Sannomiya” was derived from.
