A summery valley for basking and sun worship. Many outdoor activities such as fishing and camping.
The Tsukechi Valley, one of the best 100 basking woods in Japan at the upper stream of the Tsukechi-gawa River, is located in the southeastern part of Gifu. It is an area blessed with clean woods and clear water, while the river has been chosen as one of the best 50 rivers of the prefecture, and is part of Ura-Kiso Prefectural Natural Park. A promenade is set up at the gorge where thawing water from Mt. Ontake flows, and a campsite is nearby.
The must-sees of this valley known for its clear water are Fudo-daki Falls, which is seven meters high, and Takataru-no-taki Falls. You can visit both via the promenade. Takataru-no-taki Falls especially is known as a waterfall with an emerald basin, and popular for the budding greenery in spring, camping in summer, and changing leaves that glow against the clear water in fall.
Tsukechi Town is the gate to the Tsukechi Valley, historically known as the home of the Kiso cypress, and prospered for more than 300 years from the Edo Period as a cutover as well as a post town to Mt. Ontake pilgrimage.
There are also some camping sites nearby, to let you enjoy outdoor activities.
From Tokyo: 2h to Nagoya Station by JR Tokaido Shinkansen Line, and 1h 10 min from Nagoya to Nakatsugawa Station by JR Chuo Line. 1h from Nakatsugawa Station to Tsukechi-kyo-guchi by Kitaena Kotsu Bus. The bus runs as far as to Fudo-taki Falls in summer.
From Osaka: 1h from Shin-Osaka to Nagoya Station by Shinkansen.
