Folk Dancing

Bon is one of Japan's summer festivals and is a time when people make offerings of food and other things to their ancestors and pray for the happiness of their ancestors' souls in the next world. It takes place from the 13th to the 15th of August, and during this time the folk dance known as Bon Odori can be seen in cities, towns and villages all over Japan.

Awaodori: This is a free kind of dancing style practised in the Tokushima Pref. of Shikoku. It is often likened to the carnival of Rio de Janeiro. During the daytime a rather quiet and restrained dance called Nagashi takes place, while at night, a much more lively dance called Zomeki can be seen.
