The area of Japan is 377,873 square kilometers, nearly equivalent to Germany and Switzerland combined or slightly smaller than California. Japan consists of four major islands, surrounded by more than 4,000 smaller islands.

En-nichi
(Street Fairs)

An en-nichi, or festival day, is a day connected with Shintoist and Buddhist deities. Visitors to shrines and temples on this day can receive special divine favors. On en-nichi, shrine and temple grounds are alive with people, and street stalls do a thriving business.
