  • Yudanaka hot springs [Nagano prefecture] Yudanaka hot springs [Nagano prefecture] Said to have first been used in the 7th century, these springs are famous as miracle-working hot springs that promote longevity. They have also been favored by cultural figures. The "Ohyu" group bath area has been ranked as the most popular bath in East Japan.
  • Echigo Yuzawa hot springs [Nigata prefecture] Echigo Yuzawa hot springs [Nigata prefecture] This is the setting for Snow Country (Yukiguni), a famous work by Nobel Prize author Yasunari Kawabata. The spring quality is also great and some of the best ski resorts are also nearby, making these springs popular among skiers and resort guests. The area is about 1 hour on the Joetsu Shinkansen, from Tokyo.
  • Yamashiro hot springs [Ishikawa prefecture] Yamashiro hot springs [Ishikawa prefecture] Said to have been used since the 7th century, this is the oldest spring area in the Hokuriku region. It is favored by cultural figures as well, and has cultivated many cultural assets and a rich traditional culture heritage. The cityscape is dotted by folk dwellings and old ryokan inns with bright "bengara-goshi" window lattices, imbuing it with ambiance.

  • Yuda hot springs [Yamaguchi prefecture] Yuda hot springs [Yamaguchi prefecture] This is one of the best hot spring resort areas in the Chugoku region. There is a legend that a priest of a Buddhist temple discovered a white fox bathing in the hot spring every night. There are many sightseeing spots in the surrounding area.
