Okinawa is one of Japan's most famous resort areas. The average annual temperature in Okinawa is around 23 degrees with a subtropical oceanic climate that is unusual in Japan. Okinawa is a “paradise of eternal summer” blessed with a warm climate all year round. It consists of the main island of Okinawa and approximately 160 other beautiful islands, which are collectively referred to as “Churashima” (Beautiful Islands) in Okinawan language. Okinawa was once an independent state known as the “Ryukyu Kingdom” whose unique traditional culture and lifestyle can still be seen today. We will start a series of stories looking at the appeal of Okinawa by delving into various aspects. Part 1 will focus on the unmissable resort side of Okinawa's story, and in part 2 (published at the same time) we will introduce some mysterious World Heritage Sites.

The beautiful Okinawan coast has many international resort hotels. Time flows slowly here, against the backdrop of a sparkling emerald green sea. If you are looking for an active time, there are marine leisure options, golf, and various other activities to experience. If you would prefer a quiet and relaxing time, you can enjoy simply watching the sea or visiting spas and beauty salons. Okinawa has everything you could possibly want from a resort.

A resort full of the charm of Japan's southern countries

Since ancient times Okinawa has been involved in trade with China and various Southeast Asian countries, and its development has incorporated a diversity of peoples and cultures. Visitors are warmly welcomed by the famously large-hearted Okinawan population, whose character has been formed by the history of these islands. On meeting the Okinawan people, who value the spirit of helping their neighbors, you will realize that you are going to enjoy a pleasant stay here in Okinawa.
Okinawa has many international resort hotels that are visited by people from all across the world. These hotels provide a refined level of service, unique Japanese hospitality, and a diverse range of activities making use of the rich natural environment. In Naha City, which is Okinawa's largest metropolis, there are also city-type resort hotels that are convenient for those who want to enjoy shopping, eating out, and nightlife. Resort hotels can even be found on several isolated islands, such as Ishigaki Island and Miyako Island.

Enjoy all kinds of beach activities

Okinawa's single greatest appeal is the beautiful contrast between its white sandy beaches and stunning blue sea. Some resort hotels even have their own completely private beaches.
Most resort hotels offer various marine leisure programs. These include snorkeling, which is ideal for anyone to easily enjoy an underwater experience, exciting Jet Ski rides cutting through the waves on the sea surface, sea kayaks for a leisurely boating experience, and much more.
Of course, you may just want to lie on the beach and gaze out at the bright blue sea. At resorts on the west coast, the end of each day brings the best possible reward: the exquisite evening beach scenery, which is beautiful beyond words. This is a truly unforgettable experience.

Heaven for diving and fishing

Okinawa has some of the world's clearest seas. It is home to a beautiful coral reef where tropical fish of all colors can be seen swimming about. The underwater scenery is adored by the world's divers, too, for its unbelievable beauty and mysterious nature.
For beginners, there are “diving experiences” where one can enjoy walking through the water while being kindly guided by an instructor. If you have a diving license, on the other hand, you will no doubt want to make your way to the world-famous diving spots around the Kerama Islands and Ishigaki Island.
With various types of fish swimming in these waters throughout the year, Okinawa is popular for fishing as well as diving. On exciting trawling adventures, you can aim to catch big game fish such as dorado, marlin and tuna.

Okinawa golf courses

Golf is the most popular sport for tourists visiting Okinawa. The islands have many championship courses where tournaments are held as part of domestic and international pro golf tours. Okinawa's golf courses make excellent use of the magnificent marine landscape, rich natural environment, and features of the terrain. There are also many resort hotels located right next to the golf courses in Okinawa. For golfers, staying at one of these hotels and playing every day must be like a dream come true.

Enhance your beauty and health

There are many women who visit Okinawa to enhance their beauty. Resort hotels on the islands have spas and beauty treatment services specifically designed for women. Treatment options that use natural materials unique to Okinawa are particularly popular. One of the traditional Okinawan beauty treatments is a facial mask using “kucha” - mud from the bottom of the sea. Your beauty and health are bound to be enhanced by relaxing your body and soul here in Okinawa.

Car rentals: the best way to get about in Okinawa
Rental cars are a convenient way to get around in Okinawa. There are many car rental companies located close to Naha Airport, the gateway to Okinawa, and these will pick you up at the airport and see you off when it is time to leave. Each car rental company stocks various models, many of which are equipped with car navigation systems. Some models also have multilingual support. Most of these companies accept reservations via phone or Internet.
Japanese cars are right-hand drive, and are driven on the left-hand side of the road. Traffic signs in Japan are displayed using the metric system. In the Naha City area of the main island of Okinawa, bus lanes are open in the morning and evening. In some sections, you will also need to be aware of lanes that become central lines.
An international license is required in order to drive automobiles in Japan. Please check in advance with your local Japanese embassy or consulate to confirm whether your license can be used for driving in Japan.
