KYOTO Enjoy chirimen fabric goods and incense

Kyoto is a chirimen production district. Chirimen is a fabric used for high grade Japanese clothing. With its numerous kimono fabric stores, there are a lot of shops here that sell assorted goods made with chirimen, and the range of product types is enormous. "MANEKINEKONOTE MANEKIYA", which sells products made from chirimen like business card holders, wallets, and cute small items, is located in the Nishiki Market, which is right near Karasuma Station on the Hankyu train line (Shijo Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway).

And heading north along Kawaramachi Dori Street from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station will bring you to the shop "Kazariya". Both of these shops are packed with assorted chirimen goods, so you will know you have reached the right place right away. Passing by Kazariya and turning west on Sanjo Dori will take you to "TENSHOKAN", a store that carries Japanese design t-shirts and skirts. You could say that this kind of shop is unique to Kyoto with its large foreign population.

Westerners looking very nice in clothes with Japanese designs are a common sight. And of course, these items make the perfect souvenirs. Because incense has been required for offerings at the many temples and shrines in Kyoto from days of old, there are a lot of incense specialist shops. Recently, incense with aromas that have a relaxing effect like the fragrance of flowers is also available. At "Ishiguro Kouho", Japan's only fragrance pouch specialist shop, you can select the fragrances you like to make your own very original fragrance pouch. This is a small shop on the east side of the intersection of Sanjo Dori Street and Sakaimachi Dori Street. "SHOYEIDO", which boasts 300 years of history since its founding, also sells uniquely shaped incense burners (a special utensil used for emitting the aromatic components by adding heat to solid incense) in addition to incense. "SHOYEIDO" is on Sannenzaka Slope, which leads to Kiyomizu-dera temple, so it is good to stop by on your way to visit the temple.

KYOTO Browse souvenir shops

In Kyoto, long standing shops boasting traditions of over 100 years and souvenir shops carrying interesting souvenirs geared towards tourists that incorporate the new and old are intermingled. Also, browsing through the kinds of shops unique to the traditional atmosphere of Kyoto, like shops specializing in "kanzashi", hair adornments used by maiko (apprentice geisha) , or shops specializing in folding fans is one way to enjoy your time here. Some of the long standing shops include "Fukujuen", which deals in only the best in tea leaves and sells green sencha tea made with 100% Kyoto grown tea leaves; "Gion Koishi", a candy shop with items made with great care by skilled artisans following age-old traditional techniques; and "Yojiya", famous for its oil cleansing paper which was first created to provide Kyoto women with a high quality skin beautifier and is now extremely popular among foreigners as well.

For interesting souvenir shops with that special Kyoto flavor, we recommend "Eirakuya Hosotsuji Ihee", which offers washcloths featuring images of maiko (apprentice geisha) playing golf; "SOU SOU Tabi", which creates modern sneaker compatible versions of old style "tabi" socks that are worn when dressed in traditional Japanese clothes; and the stamp and seal shop "Tamaru Inbo", which deals in unique stamps so unique that they might just make you burst with laughter.

Most of these shops are located along Shijo Dori Street, Kyoto's main roadway, but "Tamaru Inbo" is on Shinkyogoku Dori and "SOU SOU Tabi" is located in a narrow lane a bit west from Shinkyogoku Dori.
