HOKKAIDO Sapporo Enjoy sightseeing and shopping together

The city of Sapporo is home to Hokkaido's largest urban complex. It has sightseeing spots, shopping areas, and even gourmet spots. And the location in the area around Sapporo Station with its ease of access is also a major appeal. When you arrive at Sapporo Station, first go check out the JR Tower Observation Deck that looks out over the entire city. The Tower is also home to "Sapporo Style Shop", where you can find items with a Hokkaido ambiance. After leaving the Tower, head south towards Odori Park. The contrast between the green of the garden and red of the bricks at the "Old Hokkaido Government Building" is really something to see, as is the "Sapporo City Clock Tower".

Odori Park is Sapporo's main spot. The farthest western point is perfect for lunch with "Pres Vert", a restaurant that serves up southern French cuisine with a focus on Hokkaido produce ingredients and a building housing a black tea specialist shop and Western sweets shop.

Returning to Sapporo Ekimae Dori and heading further south, you will find a lineup of fashionable shops like "MITSUKOSHI".

The east is home to the Nijo Ichiba (Nijo Market), overflowing with the flavors of Hokkaido, like fresh seafood and greens. The prices are reasonable, making this area great for souvenirs. If you do not have time to walk around town, "DOSANKO PLAZA" and "CAFE NORTE Sapporo" in Sapporo Station are convenient. You can easily find seafood and sweets here.

HOKKAIDO Otaru Stroll around an old port town with a romantic ambiance

Otaru has been a thriving herring fishing area since ages past, and still carries the pleasantly nostalgic ambiance of this old heritage in features like canals and stone storehouses. Glass products have also developed here to supply items necessary for everyday life in those days, like lamps and floating "bindama" balls (used in herring fishing).

Heading straight east along Chuo Dori Street from Otaru Station will bring you to a beautiful scenery lined with stone storehouses on the opposite shore. This is the Otaru Canal. "OTARU TAISHO GLASS PALACE", a shop that carries Japanese style glass items, is located south along the canal. Hands-on tombodama (glass beads) sessions are offered inside. Going even further south will take you to "Kitaichi Glass Third Pavilion", a glass crafts hub. Numerous lamps glisten in the auditorium made by remodeling an old storehouse, and an abundance of colorful glass items await, including faceted glass made by cutting into colored glass. On your way back, enjoy visiting a few famous sweets shops like "LeTAO Le chocoLat" to search for souvenirs. And, if you enjoy liquor, you won't want to miss a chance to visit the Tanaka Shuzo Main Shop. You can sample 10 kinds of Japanese sake. Also, 1 and a half hours from Otaru by bus is the Nikka Whisky distillation plant. Tours and sampling are available.
