FUKUOKA TENJIN Browse unique antenna shops

In addition to department stores and fashion buildings, the Tenjin area features Kyushu's best downtown area with all of the sophisticated select shops. The area around the station is home to a fantastic lineup of department stores and fashion buildings, including the long-standing Fukuoka department store "IWATAYA"; "DAIMARU", with its awesome selection of brands brimming with high quality; and "IMS", which features cafes and galleries in addition to shops overflowing with originality.

Going a little away from the station, you will find trendy shops and cafes shining with slick style. "South Side Terrace" and "Kiki Square" house authentic style boutiques and salons. And stepping into side street alleys takes you into a world of originality with shops like "niko and…", a store that carries European vintage style interior items and assorted goods at reasonable prices; "L salon", a select shop that carries simple and sophisticated items; and "sakura", a shop that carries casual items specializing in comfort.

Fukuoka is also attractive for its great selection of sweets. Places like "WA cafe RokuyouTei ", with its unique cakes made from the Japanese kinako (soy bean flour) and "matcha" (green tea powder) as special ingredients, is perfect for stopping by while strolling around town.

FUKUOKA HAKATA Walk around in the Kamikawabata shopping district with its lineup of long standing shops

The Kamikawabata shopping district is the oldest shopping district in Hakata and home to about 100 shops lined up in an arcade stretching 400 meters along the Hakata River. In the past, "Shimokawabata Shotengai" (Shimokawabata Shopping District) used to stretch south of this area, but now that district has been reborn as "CANAL CITY HAKATA". This area is home to the largest scale amusement facilities in Kyushu, housing movies and hotels in addition to shopping and gourmet cuisine. To the north side of the Kamikawabata shopping district is "Hakata Riverain", with top brands, selection shops, and hotels. The Kamikawabata shopping district is a long standing shopping district tying together these large scale facilities.

Though these are long standing shops, each one is small and down to earth. An abundance of places like fabric shops carrying antique clothing and small items and shops carrying everyday products as well as restaurants featuring foods like udon and soba noodles or grilled yakitori (grilled chicken) are packed in tightly. You can really feel how the lives of the locals are rooted in this area.

Try the famous Kawabata zenzai (sweet soup with rice cakes and bean paste) at the "Kawabata Zenzai Hiroba" (Kawabata Zenzai square), only held on the weekends. See how people lived in Hakata in the Meiji and Taisho eras and experience the Hakata weave at "Hakatamachiya Furusatokan" near the Kushida Shrine.
