[Lacquerware]

Wajima-nuri

Ishikawa
The main characteristic of Wajima-nuri is its robustness created by using "Wajima-jinoko", high-quality diatomite earth produced in Wajima. Furthermore, with the development and improvement of advanced decorating techniques such as "Chinkin (sunken gold)" and "Makie (gold relief)" used to draw extremely precise and beautiful surface patterns, Wajima-nuri has become an essential part of any discussion on lacquer craft.

When you walk inside Wajima city, you will see craft studios here and there, but if you wish to buy something, "Wajima Shikki Kaikan" with its 100 specialty shops is the place to visit. In the museum on the 2nd floor (charged), the finest items are exhibited. A set of "Meoto-wan" soup bowls, chopsticks and trays are the standard articles, but Western-type items such as coffee cups are also becoming popular. Do not forget to ask about washing and storing instructions to ensure many years of service from your purchase.
