Kyoto International Manga Museum

One of the World's Largest Collections of Manga

With a collection of about 300,000 manga-related items, from precious historical documents to the latest issues from all around the world, this is Japan's first general manga museum. It also houses the so-called "Wall of Manga" – 200 meters of the total length of bookshelves with roughly 50,000 publications that you can pick up and read for free.

Foreign visitors will be especially happy to learn that in addition to the many manga in Japanese, the Wall of Manga has some 5300 volumes in other languages too, both translations and original works: 1300 in Chinese (traditional characters), 970 in English, and many other languages.

The museum frequently organizes exhibitions of original drawings, workshops and other events as well. A joint project between Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University, the museum is located in a former primary school from around 1930. The executive director is the famous anatomist and Tokyo University professor Takeshi Yoro. Part of the building has been designated a national cultural asset, and the atmosphere inside is indeed quite special.
