A Snow Country Museum Next to 5000 Year Old Remnants

Located right next to the 5000-year-old Sannai Maruyama Historical Site, the museum's architecture too is reminiscent of an excavation site, and the building is pure white – snow country white.

"Aomori" means "blue forest," and consequently, the entrance is decorated with a tree motif and the letter "a" in neon lights.

The centerpiece of the collection is a giant 9 by 15 meter backdrop painted by Marc Chagall for the ballet Aleko, and the space is also used for concerts and theatre performances.

The museum puts particular emphasis on artists from Aomori Prefecture. One shining star among them, the pop artist Yoshitomo Nara, has made the 8.5 meter Aomori Dog, which is exhibited outdoors. It is a sculpture you can touch and it has become the symbol of the museum.

The café serves dishes made with local produce, and don't forget to take a look in the gift shop as well!
