Wakayama
Kumano Nachi-taisha Shrine, located in Nachi-Katsuura-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, ranks alongside the Kumano Hongu-taisha Shrine and Kumano Hayatama-taisha Shrine in importance and is regarded as one of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). From the earliest times, people worshipped the Great Falls of Nachi as a deity, and Onamuchi-no-Mikoto as the god of the founding of the country. This shrine is supposed to have been built in 317 at its present site near the falls. As proof of the strong faith of the Imperial Family, it is recorded that the Emperor Uda visited the shrine in 907. The Nachi-no-Hi-Matsuri (Nachi Fire Festival), a divine event using pine torches, takes place every July.
