Kumamoto
Joju-en is in the city of Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. Landscaping began in 1632 by order of Hosokawa Toshisada, the ruler of the region. However, it wasnt until the rule of his grandson, Hosokawa Tsunatoshi, that the garden was completed. The centerpiece is a crystal-clear pond which is fed constantly by spring water. Throughout the year visitors can enjoy various features. A lawn mound is laid out in imitation of the Tokai-do Highway that once connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto> The islets in the pond and an artificial hill, which is likened to Mt. Fuji, are other highlights. There is also a teahouse transferred from the famous garden at Katsura Rikyu in Kyoto.'
